Prof. Paweł Moskal awarded prestigious ERC Advanced Grant

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant to Professor Paweł Moskal from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University. The scientist will receive €2.5 million to carry out a pioneering project titled “Can tissue oxygenation be studied using positronium?”

Prof. Paweł Moskal

The European Research Council, established in 2007 by the European Commission, funds cutting-edge research across the European Union. As part of the 2024 ERC Advanced Grant competition, 281 new grants worth over €720 million have been awarded.

This year, one of the laureates is Prof. dr. hab. Paweł Moskal, head of the Nuclear Physics Department. His scientific interests include nuclear physics, particle physics, and the application of nuclear physics in medicine and public safety.

The project awarded the grant aims to test the hypothesis that the oxygenation level of cells affects the degree of quantum entanglement of high-energy photons produced in the human body during positron-electron annihilation in positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Confirming this hypothesis could lead to the development of new, non-invasive diagnostic methods for measuring tissue oxygenation in vivo. The project holds the potential to significantly improve diagnostics for diseases related to tissue hypoxia.

Another ERC Advanced Grant recipient from the Jagiellonian University is Prof. Cezary Galewicz from the Faculty of Philosophy.

Our warmest congratulations!
