On March 10, the 22nd edition of the popular science lecture series “Closer to Science” will begin.
The programme includes, among others, lectures devoted to quantum mechanics – also presented in an accessible form for those without specialist training – as well as a reflection on one of the most famous thought experiments in the history of science. We will also address the topic of synchrotron radiation in a lecture entitled “From Brightness to a Perfect Beam: The Secrets of Synchrotron Radiation,” which will introduce this phenomenon and its significance in contemporary research.
One of the meetings will take the audience on a journey through the Solar System, presenting the eight planets from a less obvious perspective and reminding us how much still remains to be discovered. Another lecture will combine the perspectives of the micro- and macro-world, showing what connects elementary particles with the largest cosmic objects and how scientists predict the existence of new particles and investigate the structure of distant astronomical objects.
The series will conclude with a lecture at the intersection of physics, engineering and medicine devoted to miniature endoscopes supporting the treatment of premature infants. The speaker will discuss “physics on the millimetre scale” and how interdisciplinary technological solutions can have a tangible impact on clinical practice.
For whom?
“Closer to Science” is open to all interested participants. The lectures are recorded and made available on the Faculty’s YouTube channel, allowing viewers to access their content at a convenient time. Each meeting concludes with a discussion with the speaker. When and where?
The lectures take place on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University, located at 11 Łojasiewicza Street in Kraków. Admission is free.
