Offer Description

We offer up to three Ph.D. positions in Theoretical Particle Physics in the group of Particle Theory at the Jagiellonian University. The group consists of dr hab. Piotr Korcyl, dr Tomasz Stebel, prof. Michał Praszałowicz, prof. Leszek Motyka and prof. Wojciech Florkowski. The current activities are described here: https://ztc.ift.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/aktualnosci. The successful applicant will be expected to work on the topics related to the phenomenology of QCD, non-perturbative effects, high energy evolution, Monte Carlo algorithms, encompassing both analytical and numerical aspects. Research work will be carried out at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University.

Education Level: Master Degree or equivalent

Skills/Qualifications:

  • MSc in theoretical physics
  • very good knowledge of theoretical physics at the level of 2nd degree
  • fluent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • programming skills at very good level (preferably C, C++)

  • scientific curriculum vitae, including a list of scientific achievements (publications, conference presentations, scholarships, etc.)
  • motivation letter explaining interest in joining the project
  • two recommendation letters sent directly to the address given below
  • scan of the MSc diploma
  • Master Thesis or its extended summary in English
  • transcript of grades or another document listing completed courses and grades (information about the grading scale must be included)

Selection process 
The selection process of the best candidates will have a three-stage character: 
First stage (based on documents): 

Documents specified above should be sent as one compressed zip-file to dr hab. Piotr Korcyl before 28 March 2024, 23:59 CET. The message title should be of the form “PhD position opening, Applicant’s full name” and the attachment should contain Applicant’s name as well. The Selection Committee (dr hab. Piotr Korcyl --  Chairman) selects short-listed candidates who will be interviewed by the Selection Committee (maximum 6 persons). The decision of the Selection Committee will be based on the Applicants’ grades obtained during the MSc studies, recommendation letters, scientific achievements, and other accomplishments in science (distinctions, awards, etc.).

Second stage (based on the interview with the Selection Committee):  

The interviews will be held online or in person between April 2 and April 30, 2024. The applicants will be contacted in advance to fix the interview time. The same Selection Committee will decide about at most three candidates who will be recommended to take part in the entrance examination to the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the Jagiellonian University.    

If no candidate is selected for the entrance examination, the selection process is closed at this stage with no Ph.D. student funded by NCN. 

Third stage (based on the result of the entrance examination to the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the Jagiellonian University)

Participation (online or in person) of the recommended candidates in the entrance examination to the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the Jagiellonian University (shortly called below the exam). Details and deadlines are described here: https://science.phd.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/. The Applicants selected at the second stage are responsible for submitting their documents to the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the Jagiellonian University according to the recruitment schedule. The recruitment is expected to start in June 2024 and the candidates may obtain the final decision by July 2024.

The candidates who pass the entrance exam are eligible for the Doctoral School funding. The same Selection Committee decides to share the funds from the NCN grant among the candidates as additional funding, besides the Doctoral School funding.
