Postdoctoral position in “Understanding and controlling surface manipulation and wear processes on the nanoscale”

The Nanomechanics Group

The goal of our research is to understand physical mechanisms governing surface phenomena such as friction, wear and adhesion down to the atomic scale and the controlled manipulation of long molecules and metal clusters on solid surfaces. This is made possible by the combination of advanced microscopy techniques such as AFM, SEM and TEM with modeling work and numeric simulations performed in collaboration with research groups from several countries. This research line, which is fundamental in nature, has a broad range of applications ranging from solid lubrication to sensorics. It may also help to understand and mitigate environmental problems such as the nucleation and release of nanoparticles out of solid surfaces repeatedly scratched.

Minimum Job Requirements

PhD in Physics, Materials Science or related fields
At least three published peer-review papers. Fluency in both written and spoken English.

Desired Skills

Experience with atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and/or transmission electron microscopy. Strong publication record. Creativity, motivation and communication skills. Experience with MATLAB, Python and/or C language will be also appreciated.

Project duration

24 months (fixed-term contract)
